Adani Green launches world's largest battery storage system in Gujarat
Adani Green Energy Ltd has commissioned a 3.37 GWh Battery Energy Storage System in Khavda, Gujarat, marking the world's largest single-location deployment outside China. Completed in just 10 months, this system can power nearly one million homes for a day. It supports peak electricity demand and will help stabilize renewable energy delivery as the company plans to expand its storage capacity significantly in the coming years.

Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has successfully commissioned a cumulative 3.37 Gigawatt-hour (GWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda, Gujarat. This achievement marks the world's largest single-location battery storage deployment outside of China and one of the fastest executed globally, completed in just 10 months since the start of construction. The BESS can store enough clean energy to power nearly one million homes for an entire day, significantly enhancing the reliability of renewable energy supply during peak demand hours. The BESS project at Khavda integrates advanced energy management systems with state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery technologies. This strategic deployment boosts AGEL’s total operational BESS capacity to 3.37 GWh, including 1.37 GWh added in March 2026, while playing a crucial role in ensuring grid reliability and supporting the transition to clean energy.
As renewable energy generation can be intermittent, the BESS addresses this variability by storing excess energy and supplying it when demand peaks, thus contributing to a more stable energy infrastructure. AGEL’s commitment to expanding its energy storage capabilities is evident in its plans to add over 10 GWh of battery storage capacity in FY27, with aspirations to reach 50 GWh over the next five years. This initiative is part of a larger vision to develop a 30 GW renewable energy plant at Khavda by 2029, further solidifying India’s position in the global renewable energy landscape. The project is designed to support peak electricity demands in cities like Indore and Chandigarh, as well as the entire state of Goa. Additionally, this deployment is expected to provide broader economic and environmental benefits.
By facilitating the stable delivery of renewable energy, the BESS helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to India's decarbonization goals. AGEL’s efforts reflect a dedication to sustainable growth, with the company’s portfolio being certified as water positive and zero waste-to-landfill. This commitment to environmental stewardship is crucial as the demand for clean energy continues to rise globally. Looking ahead, AGEL’s BESS project at Khavda sets a precedent for future developments in energy storage technology. As the company continues to innovate and expand its capabilities, it aims to create resilient energy systems that can adapt to the increasing reliance on renewable sources. The successful commissioning of this BESS not only enhances energy security in India but also positions AGEL as a leader in the global clean energy transition, demonstrating the potential of utility-scale battery storage to revolutionize energy delivery.
