Bengaluru Community Restores Well to Provide Water
In Sampangiram Nagar, Bengaluru, residents and SayTrees Environmental Trust restored an old neglected well, now supplying over 1,000 litres of water daily.

Residents of Sampangiram Nagar in Bengaluru have successfully revived an old stone well that had long been left to decay. What was once a pit filled with plastic, silt, and debris is now a vital resource for the neighborhood. Completed in 2022 with help from the SayTrees Environmental Trust and corporate social responsibility (CSR) funding, the project transformed the site into a functional supply capable of storing 43,000 litres of water. It now provides more than 1,000 litres every day through a public tap.
The restoration addresses a common problem in urban areas where traditional water sources are often neglected. Over the years, the well had become little more than a dumping ground, losing its original purpose. Reviving it required an extensive cleanup to remove the thick layers of waste and sludge that had built up over time. Beyond simply restoring the water, the effort was designed to highlight why local infrastructure like this needs constant care.
This was a joint effort between local residents, environmental groups, and civic authorities. Workers used motors to pump out the stagnant water, allowing them to reach the bottom for a deep clean. A combination of manual labor and machinery was used to clear away years of trash, which was then hauled away for proper disposal. The well now stands as a practical example of what can be achieved when a community works together to solve local problems.
The benefits of the project reach further than the water supply itself. Life in Sampangiram Nagar has improved with a reliable and easy-to-reach source of water available to all. The process has also given residents a sense of pride and shared responsibility for their local resources. This shift in perspective often encourages people to take on similar projects that focus on environmental health and long-term sustainability.
The success of the Sampangiram Nagar well offers a path forward for other neighborhoods facing similar issues. It demonstrates how cooperation can help manage urban water scarcity and shows the value of protecting local assets. This initiative reflects how small-scale, grassroots actions can lead to meaningful changes in a city, helping to build a more resilient environment for the years ahead.
