In Wazirpur, Delhi, Vinay Das has successfully led a community initiative that has engaged 1,600 children in cleaning 250 parks and public spaces since 2018. This effort combines free tuition classes for migrant children with weekly Sunday clean-up drives. Each Sunday, groups of 40 to 50 children don gloves and masks to clear rubbish from neglected areas, transforming their environment and instilling a sense of responsibility. What began with 150 children cleaning a single park has grown significantly, demonstrating the power of collective action in addressing local environmental issues.

Vinay Das, who has lived modestly with his family, started his journey in education by offering free tuition to underprivileged children in 2013. Having faced challenges in his own childhood, he chose to dedicate his life to supporting children from similar backgrounds instead of pursuing a secure teaching position. His commitment to education and community service has inspired many, leading to the formation of a dedicated group of young volunteers who not only clean but also learn about the importance of environmental stewardship.

The clean-up drives have expanded beyond Wazirpur, aided by social media, which has allowed volunteers to reach out to local residents for additional neglected spots. Former volunteers like Shruti now support the initiative while pursuing their education, and the community has started to recognize the significance of keeping public spaces clean. With around 350 children actively participating in cleanup efforts at any given time, they also plant saplings where garbage once stood, further enhancing the environment they are working to protect.

The initiative carries significant social and environmental benefits. Volunteers remove not only household waste but also discarded idols, which can pose environmental hazards. Das has emphasized the importance of awareness, painting messages on trees to discourage littering and educate passers-by. As they clean, the children engage in discussions about the impact of waste on their community, fostering a culture of responsibility and respect for their surroundings.

Looking ahead, Vinay Das aims to expand his efforts through his newly registered NGO, Swasti Das Seva Samiti. With the growing recognition of their work, including support from local authorities, the initiative is poised to inspire similar movements across other regions. The goal is to instill a sense of civic responsibility in these young volunteers, encouraging them to carry these values into adulthood and advocate for cleaner communities wherever they go.
