In June 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo approved Acoziborole Winthrop as a single-dose treatment for sleeping sickness. This breakthrough drug offers a safe and effective option for patients and will be provided free of charge.

In June 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) approved Acoziborole Winthrop (acoziborole) as a single-dose oral treatment for both early- and advanced-stage gambiense human African trypanosomiasis, commonly known as sleeping sickness. This approval represents a significant advancement in the treatment of the disease, which primarily impacts adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older who weigh at least 40 kilograms. The decision follows successful Phase II/III clinical trials conducted in the DRC and Guinea, which demonstrated that acoziborole is safe and has a cure rate of up to 96 percent across both stages of the disease. The drug will be provided to patients free of charge, greatly enhancing access to treatment for those affected by sleeping sickness.
