In Ghatotand, West Bokaro, Jharkhand, Nitesh Kumar, a former IT professional, took a significant step towards improving education in his hometown. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he recognized the challenges faced by local children due to mining-led relocations, which pushed schools nearly 20 kilometers away. To address this issue, he invested ₹1.25 crore, utilizing savings and loans, to establish Nav Gurukul World School on his ancestral land. This initiative opened its doors in February 2025, aiming to provide affordable, activity-based education that is accessible to the children in the surrounding villages. The school has successfully enrolled over 200 students and has expanded its curriculum up to Class 5, offering a second chance at education for many, including children like nine-year-old Yuvraj.

Historically, West Bokaro developed around a coal-mining economy, which supported a large township with essential facilities, including schools. However, as mining operations grew, many buildings were demolished, and families were relocated, leading to the closure or relocation of schools. The distance to these new schools became a barrier for many children, particularly those from low-income families. For some, the cost of transportation compounded the already challenging situation, leading to a decline in school attendance. Nitesh Kumar's personal journey from Jharkhand to becoming an IT engineer in Bengaluru made him acutely aware of these educational disparities, especially when he returned home during the pandemic and witnessed the impact firsthand.

The implementation of Nav Gurukul World School involved meticulous planning and community engagement. Nitesh Kumar collaborated with experienced educators to design a curriculum that focuses on child-friendly learning through stories, activities, and play. He personally oversaw the construction of the two-storey building, which took nine months to complete. The school is equipped with classrooms, a play area, and modern teaching aids to cater to the learning needs of children. Principal B V Priyamvada, with her three decades of experience in education, leads the school with a vision to instill a love for learning among students.

The school's approach emphasizes individualized attention, ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, receives the support they need to thrive. The establishment of Nav Gurukul World School brings broader economic, environmental, and social benefits to the local community. By providing accessible education, the school empowers children and their families, reducing the need for families to relocate for better educational opportunities. The school also fosters a sense of community by bringing children from different villages together, promoting cultural celebrations and teamwork.

The focus on English communication and critical thinking skills prepares the students for future challenges, enhancing their prospects for higher education and employment opportunities within and beyond Jharkhand. Looking ahead, Nitesh Kumar plans to expand Nav Gurukul World School into a full secondary institution, allowing students to continue their education locally. His vision is to create an educational environment where leaving Jharkhand for better opportunities becomes a choice rather than a necessity.

By investing in the future of local children, he hopes to contribute to the development of a more educated and empowered generation, potentially inspiring similar initiatives in other regions facing educational challenges. The school's success signifies a broader movement towards enhancing educational access in rural areas across India.
