FLEX is designed to measure the faint fluorescence emitted by plants during photosynthesis. This signal, not visible to the naked eye, can be captured from space. Such capability allows the satellite to assess plant health and stress levels, providing vital information for understanding the interactions between vegetation and atmospheric conditions. The satellite will produce global maps of vegetation fluorescence with a resolution of 300 m × 300 m, aiding in the study of ecosystem dynamics.
Sentinel-3C is the third satellite in the Sentinel-3 series, which has been operational since the first satellite’s launch a decade ago. This new satellite will carry four advanced scientific instruments that can rapidly collect data across vast regions, ensuring continuity and enhancing the understanding of climate change impacts. The Vega-C rocket, which successfully deployed both satellites, stands at 35 meters tall and can lift payloads of up to 2300 kilograms into space. The Vega-C program, led by ESA in partnership with Avio, aims to ensure that Europe maintains versatile and independent access to space. This launch, known as flight VV30, marks another step in the evolution of European space capabilities, complementing the Ariane family of launch vehicles.
