Bengaluru-based GalaxEye has secured approximately USD 6.5 million from India’s Technology Development Board (TDB) through its Research Development and Innovation Fund. The investment supports the creation of a multisensor OptoSAR satellite designed for high-resolution Earth observation. With a total project cost of around USD 25.5 million, the initiative aims to move the technology from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 to TRL 9, bringing it closer to commercial use.

The project centers on OptoSAR technology, which combines Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) with Electro-Optical (EO) imaging. This hybrid approach allows the satellite to capture sub-0.5 metre high-resolution images, essential for tasks like long-range surveillance, vehicle detection, and target classification. Because it works across different lighting and weather conditions, the technology offers a versatile tool for several industries.

This agreement highlights a broader effort by the Indian government to build domestic expertise in space technology. Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of the TDB, said this partnership is a step towards enabling and supporting innovative projects that have the potential to transform the landscape of satellite technology in India. With this backing, GalaxEye can speed up the validation of its system, merging the distinct advantages of radar and optical sensors.

The initiative marks a shift in Earth observation, providing the kind of detailed data needed for agriculture, urban planning, and disaster management. By refining satellite imaging, the project offers better tools for decision-making in both the public and private sectors. Its ability to function in varying environmental conditions makes it a useful addition to the field of remote sensing.

As the OptoSAR satellite moves through its development phases, it contributes to both local and global progress in satellite innovation. The potential applications of the technology may open fresh paths for space research and exploration. This focus on advancing satellite capabilities helps define India’s role in the international aerospace industry, setting a foundation for future projects that use sophisticated technology for practical benefits.
