The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. is set to reopen its Sculpture Garden on October 31, 2026, following a significant redesign by renowned Japanese artist and architect Hiroshi Sugimoto. This redesign represents the most extensive transformation of the space since the museum's original cylindrical building and sunken garden were completed in 1974 by Gordon Bunshaft. Sugimoto's redesign preserves the modernist essence of the original campus while enhancing the openness and flexibility of the garden. The new layout features monumental stacked stone walls that divide the garden into several interconnected areas, including the East and Central Gardens and the West Lawn, creating a more dynamic environment for visitors and art.
