The final close is anticipated by December 2026.

The IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I has successfully achieved its first close at ₹450 crore as of September 26, 2026. This fund is a collaborative effort by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, IIT Madras Research Park, and Unicorn India Ventures. Its goal is to raise a total of ₹1,000 crore to support deep-tech startups in India. The fund particularly focuses on investing in early-stage companies that are engineering-heavy and have reached Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3–4. This initiative signifies a commitment to fostering innovation in the deep-tech sector and strengthening India's position in global technology.
The fund has received backing from notable IIT Madras alumni, including Kris Gopalakrishnan, co-founder of Infosys, along with family offices, institutions, corporates, and banks. A spokesperson for IIT Madras Research Park noted that the first close was achieved within three months of receiving approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). This swift progress reflects the strong interest in the potential of deep-tech startups within the Indian ecosystem.
Currently, the fund has invested approximately ₹55 crore in four startups, including Hathor, which is developing semi cryogenic and cryogenic rocket engines, and Carbelim, which focuses on improving air quality through nature-based decarbonization technology. Other recipients of funding include Quanstra, working on quantum instrumentation, and Triolt Energy, which is innovating in lithium energy storage solutions. The fund plans to build a diverse portfolio of around 25 startups, with average investments ranging from ₹15–25 crore.
The IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund is particularly focused on six strategic areas: Defence Technology, Space Technology, Semiconductors, Manufacturing Technology, AI Infrastructure, and Health Tech. Each of these sectors presents significant opportunities for India to develop competitive global capabilities. The fund aims not only to support individual startups but also to enhance India's overall technology landscape, promoting self-reliance and innovation in critical sectors.
Looking ahead, the final close of the fund is expected by December 2026. Leadership at IIT Madras believes that this initiative will play a vital role in bridging the 'patient capital' gap essential for the success of deep-tech startups. As stated by V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, the fund is a strategic move to help promising startups navigate their growth challenges and potentially achieve unicorn status. This effort aligns with India's broader goals of fostering innovation and establishing a leadership position in frontier technologies.
