In September 2026, IIT Madras, the IIT Madras Research Park, and Unicorn India Ventures announced the first close of the IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I, achieving a total of Rs 450 crore. This milestone comes just three months after receiving approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The fund has already deployed approximately Rs 55 crore across four deep-tech startups, marking a significant step in fostering innovation within India’s technology ecosystem.
The initiative aims to provide long-term capital to support the growth of IP-led, globally competitive companies emerging from IIT Madras. The IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I responds to the growing entrepreneurial ambition within India, recognizing the need for patient capital to support deep-tech startups. IIT Madras has established itself as a pioneer in translational research and innovation, nurturing startups that advance scientific and engineering capabilities.
Natarajan Malupillai, Group CEO of IITM Research Park and Incubation Cell, emphasized that the fund seeks to strengthen India’s technology capabilities, build self-reliance in critical sectors, and position India as a global leader in frontier technologies. To date, the fund has made significant investments in four startups: Hathor, a Chennai-based spacetech company developing semi-cryogenic and cryogenic rocket engines; Quanstra, a Delhi-based quantum deep-tech startup focused on advanced quantum instrumentation; Triolt Energy, which specializes in high-performance lithium-ion battery cells; and Carbelim, known for its bio-integrated carbon capture systems.
These startups exemplify the fund's commitment to supporting high-conviction verticals where India has a competitive advantage, including defense technology, space technology, semiconductors, and health tech. The broader economic impact of the IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I is substantial, as it aims to create a portfolio of 25 deep-tech startups that can significantly contribute to technological advancements and economic growth in India. Bhaskar Majumdar, Managing Partner at Unicorn India Ventures, highlighted the defining decade ahead for deep-tech startups in India, emphasizing the fund’s role in providing necessary capital and strategic support for emerging companies.
The presence of the Finance Minister at this milestone reflects the increasing recognition of deep-tech as a critical driver of innovation and economic growth in the country. As the fund progresses, it plans to continue investing in IP-led deep-tech startups, focusing on enhancing India’s capacity for technological innovation. The final close of the fund is targeted for the end of the year, with expectations to attract institutional investors and banks.
Unicorn India Ventures, as the fund manager, aims to leverage its capabilities to mobilize additional capital and ensure that portfolio companies have the resources needed for sustained growth. The IITM Unicorn Frontier Fund I not only supports individual startups but also contributes to the broader ambition of establishing India as a hub for cutting-edge technology on the global stage.
