On September 26, 2026, in Bengaluru, Karnataka, the IIT Madras Unicorn Frontier Fund I announced its first close at ₹450 crore. This milestone comes just three months after the fund received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to launch. With a target corpus of ₹1,000 crore, including a greenshoe option of ₹400 crore, the announcement was made in the presence of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, marking a notable moment for the Indian startup ecosystem.

Backed by IIT Madras, the IIT Madras Research Park, and the venture capital firm Unicorn India Ventures, the fund has drawn interest from a range of stakeholders. Natarajan Malupillai, Group CEO of IITM Research Park, stated that the fund has garnered interest from various stakeholders, including IIT-M alumni, clients from the Research Park ecosystem, and banking institutions. This funding base reflects an interest among alumni and investors in supporting deep-tech innovation in India. The fund expects to reach its final close by December 2026 and is currently in discussions with sovereign and institutional investors to expand its capital base.

While startups from the IIT Madras incubation cell are prioritized for funding, the Unicorn Frontier Fund also considers external companies working on critical technologies. It has already deployed nearly ₹55 crore into four deep tech startups: Hathor, Quanstra, Triolt Energy, and Carbelim. Targeted sectors for investment include space, defense, semiconductors, advanced AI, IoT, health tech, and climate tech. To qualify, startups must have validated products that have reached at least Technology Readiness Level 4.

The fund is expected to have a broad economic impact by fostering innovation and helping India establish itself as a leader in advanced technology. By focusing on sectors such as health tech and climate tech, the fund aims to support growth while addressing pressing societal challenges. Additionally, the approach to nurturing early-stage companies is intended to create jobs and encourage entrepreneurship across the country.

Looking ahead, the IIT Madras Unicorn Frontier Fund aims to generate a pipeline of deep tech IPOs by 2030 or 2032, with a goal of achieving revenue models exceeding ₹1,000 crore. The success of the fund will play a part in shaping India’s deep-tech landscape, providing startups with the capital and strategic support needed to scale and compete internationally. This collaboration between IIT Madras and Unicorn India Ventures demonstrates how partnerships can drive both innovation and economic growth.
