India's renewable energy generation increases by 11% in FY27
India's renewable energy generation, including large hydro, increased 11.03% to 304.24 billion units in the first half of FY27, with solar power seeing a significant rise of 47.14%.

India's renewable energy generation has seen a notable increase, rising by 11.03% to reach 304.24 billion units (BU) during the first half of the financial year 2026-27. This growth, reported by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), is primarily driven by a substantial surge in solar power generation. Between April and September 2026, solar energy output increased by 47.14%, totaling 119.68 BU, which accounted for approximately 39.3% of the total renewable energy generation, including large hydro. This trend reflects India's commitment to expanding its renewable energy capacity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The data indicates that renewable energy, excluding large hydropower, experienced an even more impressive growth of 25.99%, totaling 210.24 BU compared to 166.86 BU in the same period the previous year.
The increase in solar power generation has positioned it as the largest contributor to this growth, highlighting the effectiveness of India's investments in solar energy infrastructure and technology. Wind energy also contributed positively, with generation rising by 9.71% to 79.81 BU. Despite the overall growth in renewable energy, the figures reveal a decline in large hydropower generation, which fell by 12.28% to 94.01 BU. While small hydro and bagasse-based generation also experienced decreases, the overall increase in renewable generation illustrates a shift towards more diverse energy sources. The report notes that generation data excludes electricity imports from Bhutan, which are recorded separately.
In September 2026, renewable energy generation reached 50.67 BU, up 4.74% from the previous year. Solar generation in that month rose by 48.84% to 20.18 BU, indicating strong seasonal performance. The trends suggest that solar energy will continue to play a pivotal role in India's renewable energy landscape, particularly as the country aims to enhance its energy security and sustainability. Looking ahead, the ongoing rise in renewable energy generation is crucial for India's long-term energy strategy. With states like Gujarat and Rajasthan leading in renewable generation, the government is expected to focus on policies that further promote solar and wind energy. The increasing capacity and efficiency of renewable sources are essential for meeting growing energy demands while addressing climate change challenges. This upward trend in renewable energy generation signifies India's potential to become a leader in global renewable energy efforts.
