On November 2, 2026, Kakao Investment announced that the second cohort of its Kakao AI Sail Departure program received 122 applications, marking an 85% increase from the 66 teams that applied for the first cohort. This program aims to connect promising artificial intelligence technologies and ideas from South Korea's four major science and technology institutes with startup formation and commercialization opportunities. The rise in applications indicates growing interest among AI startup teams and reflects the program's success in fostering innovation. Co-hosted by Kakao Investment and Kakao AI Dot, the Kakao AI Sail Departure program seeks to identify and support promising AI technologies from institutions such as the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), and the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST). By facilitating connections between research-stage technologies and business opportunities, the program aims to enhance the commercialization process and support the growth of AI startups.
Implementation of the program involves a rigorous selection process, culminating in a final investor relations session and awards ceremony scheduled for November 10, where eight winning teams will be selected. These winners will receive investment reviews and proof-of-concept opportunities with Kakao affiliates starting in December. The expanded awards, increasing from five to eight winners, along with a doubling of total prize money to 75 million won ($52,000), show a commitment to fostering a vibrant AI startup ecosystem. The broader economic and social benefits of the Kakao AI Sail Departure program include the potential for commercialization of innovative technologies and the creation of new job opportunities within the AI sector. Successful teams from the first cohort, such as Anybridge AI and Blackbox, have already secured investment and completed proof-of-concept projects, highlighting the program's impact on the startup landscape.
By nurturing talent and innovation, Kakao Investment is contributing to the development of a competitive AI industry in South Korea. Looking ahead, Kakao Investment plans to continue expanding support for AI startups, ensuring that more teams can access resources and opportunities for growth. The program's success thus far suggests that it will play a crucial role in advancing AI technology and entrepreneurship in South Korea. As the second cohort progresses, the program aims to further strengthen connections between research institutions and the startup ecosystem, creating an environment where innovation can thrive.
