London has officially opened the Monument Micro Museum, a compact space dedicated to the history of the Great Fire of London. Located beside The Monument in the City of London, this museum measures just 4 square metres, making it the smallest museum in the city, if not the world. Commissioned by Eastern City BID, the museum provides a platform for exploring the events of the Great Fire, which significantly shaped the city’s history. Visitors can engage with a bespoke 3D map of London, enhanced by lighting and audio that narrates the story of this pivotal event. The Great Fire of London, which occurred in 1666, is a defining moment in the city’s history, yet until now, there has been no museum solely focused on it. The Monument Micro Museum fills this gap, offering an immersive experience that combines visual and auditory storytelling.

The museum features a looping 5-minute audio-visual presentation and displays extending beyond its small interior, ensuring that visitors gain a comprehensive understanding of the Great Fire's impact and aftermath. This initiative revitalizes a previously mothballed space and transforms it into a public attraction that is free to visit. The museum is expected to attract up to 200,000 visitors annually, appealing to both local school groups and the millions of tourists who frequent the City of London each year. Its location directly next to The Monument enhances the visitor experience, allowing for a deeper connection to the historical context of the area.

William Austin, Cultural Partnerships Manager at Eastern City BID, emphasized the importance of creating a space that is small yet impactful. The museum’s design encourages visitors to engage with the history of the Great Fire in a new and meaningful way. The project showcases how investment in small, innovative spaces can breathe life back into underutilized areas, contributing to the cultural landscape of London. As the City of London prepares to celebrate the 350th anniversary of The Monument's completion, the introduction of the Monument Micro Museum is both timely and significant. The museum is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, complementing visits to The Monument and surrounding attractions. This new cultural space is set to enhance the public's understanding of a foundational event in London’s history and serves as a welcome addition to the city's heritage offerings.
