On October 2, 2026, Oman marked the inauguration of the Ibri 2 solar independent power project, a significant step in the nation’s transition toward renewable energy. Developed by a consortium of ACWA Power, Gulf Investment Corporation, and Alternative Energy Projects Co., the facility is the first solar independent power project (IPP) to be integrated into the national grid. Representing an investment of US$417 million, Ibri 2 has a capacity of 500 megawatts (MW), providing enough electricity for approximately 50,000 homes. The project is expected to offset 340,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, supporting Oman’s broader strategy for sustainability and energy diversification.

Work on Ibri 2 was completed in 13 months while adhering to rigorous health and safety standards. It forms part of a larger national renewable energy program aimed at increasing the share of clean sources within the country's energy mix. This effort is central to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and addressing the environmental challenges of carbon emissions. The successful delivery of Ibri 2 now serves as a reference point for future renewable energy developments in the region.

The inauguration ceremony was held under the patronage of His Excellency Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal al Busaidi, Omani Minister of Interior, and attended by His Excellency Eng. Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al-Falih, Saudi Minister of Investment. The event highlighted the cooperation between the project’s key stakeholders. Under the current agreement, the facility will generate renewable energy for the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) over a 15-year period, reinforcing the partnership between the government and the private sector in developing energy solutions.

The economic impact of Ibri 2 extends beyond the production of electricity. By supplying power to thousands of homes, the project contributes to local development and supports the quality of life for many citizens. Furthermore, it serves as a model for other nations in the area looking to invest in their own renewable infrastructure, demonstrating the practical benefits and reliability of solar power.

Looking forward, Ibri 2 is expected to encourage further renewable energy investments across Oman and the wider region. As countries work toward their respective climate goals, the project illustrates the role solar energy can play in driving sustainable development. Future projects may build on this success, continuing to integrate renewable sources into the national grid and supporting the shift toward a greener economy.
