PowerChina Launches 1 GW Hybrid Solar Power Plant in Qinghai
PowerChina has commissioned a 1 GW hybrid solar power plant in Gonghe County, Qinghai Province. This facility integrates 900 MW of photovoltaic power with 100 MW of concentrated solar power and thermal storage, marking a significant advancement in China's renewable energy landscape.

PowerChina has successfully commissioned a 1 GW hybrid solar power plant in Gonghe County, Qinghai Province, on October 1, 2026. This facility marks a significant milestone in renewable energy, combining 900 MW of photovoltaic generation with 100 MW of concentrated solar power (CSP) technology and a thermal storage system that uses molten salts. Notably, this project is China's first gigawatt-scale facility to integrate these technologies, enhancing the management of renewable energy production and storage.
The plant features a photovoltaic area that includes approximately 1.9 million solar modules, capable of producing 900 MW in alternating current and around 1.25 GW in direct current. The CSP component is equipped with a thermal storage system that can store energy as heat for up to eight hours. This capability allows the plant to generate electricity even during periods of low sunlight, improving energy reliability and efficiency throughout the day. By integrating these technologies, the facility optimizes the use of renewable resources and addresses challenges related to energy supply and demand.
In addition to its innovative technology, the plant's design promotes coexistence with local livestock activities. The photovoltaic park includes support structures that allow for grazing beneath the solar panels, ensuring the maintenance of traditional land uses. This approach is particularly important in areas like the Talatan Plateau, where construction faced challenges due to high altitude and harsh weather conditions. The project aims to harness the region's energy potential while minimizing disruption to local ecosystems.
Expected to produce approximately 2.2 TWh of electricity annually, the facility will significantly contribute to the region's renewable energy supply. According to PowerChina, this output will prevent the consumption of around 690,000 tons of standard coal each year, highlighting the environmental benefits of the project. The successful launch of this plant underscores the growing importance of hybrid energy solutions in the transition towards sustainable energy sources.
Looking ahead, PowerChina plans to further develop renewable energy projects in China's northern and western regions. The integration of advanced technologies in this hybrid solar plant sets a precedent for future projects, potentially expanding the role of renewable energy in China's energy strategy. This initiative not only supports local energy needs but also contributes to global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.
