On October 5, 2026, Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) reached a significant milestone by fully commissioning the Transmission Scheme for the Solar Energy Zone in Bidar, Karnataka. This project, with a capacity of 2,500 megawatts (MW), was awarded through a tariff-based competitive bidding process. Its successful operation is an important step in enhancing the infrastructure needed for renewable energy transmission in India. The Transmission Scheme includes a 765 kV double-circuit (D/C) line along with associated substations. The Date of Commercial Operation (DOCO) was confirmed on October 5, and the notification regarding this achievement was received shortly thereafter on October 8.

This project was initially assigned to POWERGRID Bidar Transmission Limited, a subsidiary of POWERGRID, which later amalgamated with POWERGRID Khavda II-C Transmission Limited as of March 1, 2026, following a directive from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. In addition to the solar transmission project, the region has seen an increase in renewable energy initiatives, including a recent order awarded to Kshema Power for developing transmission infrastructure for a 315 MW wind power project. Other projects in the area include the 400 kV Gadag–II Transmission Line, designed to facilitate renewable energy evacuation from the Koppal Solar Energy Zone, and a new line aimed at enhancing capacity at Davanagere.

The comprehensive transmission network established through these initiatives plays a vital role in integrating renewable energy into the national grid. It is expected to support the evacuation of power generated from various renewable sources, thereby contributing to India's energy goals and sustainability efforts. Looking ahead, the successful commissioning of this solar transmission project marks an important step in India's transition to renewable energy. As the country continues to invest in clean energy infrastructure, further developments in transmission capabilities will be essential for meeting future energy demands and enhancing the reliability of the power supply across the region and beyond.
