Titan Restores Akka Thangai Lake, Supporting 500 Farmers
On October 29, 2026, Titan Company Limited completed the restoration of Akka Thangai Lake in Tamil Nadu, India, after nearly 50 years. This initiative is expected to support 500 farmers and improve water availability for agriculture across 511 acres of farmland.

Titan Company Limited has successfully restored the Akka Thangai Lake, a traditional irrigation tank located in Anchetty, Thally block, Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu, India, on October 29, 2026. This marks the first restoration of the lake in nearly 50 years, addressing long-standing issues such as silt accumulation and weakened water structures. The project is anticipated to significantly benefit around 500 farmers in the region by augmenting water availability and enhancing agricultural productivity across 511 acres of farmland.
Historically, Akka Thangai Lake has been a vital resource for local farmers, but it gradually lost its functionality over the years due to various environmental challenges. Groundwater levels had reportedly declined significantly, and rainfed agriculture in the area fell to approximately 40 percent. This deterioration placed immense pressure on farming livelihoods that relied on seasonal rainfall and borewell water. The restoration initiative led by Titan, under its Pragati sustainability program, aims to revive the lake's capacity and restore its role as a dependable irrigation source.
The implementation of the restoration project involved collaboration between Titan Company Limited and the National Agro Foundation. Key activities included desilting the lake, renovating sluice structures, and strengthening bunds to enhance water management. Approximately 2.36 lakh cubic meters of silt were removed, and additional infrastructure was constructed to improve the lake's ability to capture and hold rainwater. With a storage capacity now at approximately 10.36 lakh kilolitres, the restoration is expected to recharge around 85 borewells, enabling more predictable agricultural cycles for local farmers.
The broader benefits of the Akka Thangai Lake restoration extend beyond just water availability. This initiative is poised to improve rural resilience by supporting agricultural productivity and enhancing the livelihoods of farming communities. Improved water retention will not only help farmers manage water stress but will also contribute to ecological restoration through the plantation of vegetation around the lake. The project highlights the importance of sustainable water management practices in regions where agriculture heavily relies on seasonal rainfall.
Looking ahead, the focus will be on maintaining the functionality of Akka Thangai Lake through regular upkeep and community involvement. Titan Company Limited emphasizes that sustaining the lake's benefits requires ongoing participation from local communities, ensuring that its revival supports long-term agricultural resilience. This restoration project serves as a model for future initiatives aimed at revitalizing traditional water bodies and enhancing water security for rural areas in India and beyond.
