UltraTech Cement has made a significant advancement in renewable energy by commissioning a 116.55 MW wind energy project in Barmer, Rajasthan. This achievement, announced by the company on Monday, brings UltraTech's total captive green power capacity to 2,024 MW, making it the first Indian firm to exceed 2 GW in this area. The milestone underscores UltraTech's commitment to sustainability and its strategic focus on transitioning to greener energy sources, reflecting the company's leadership in environmental responsibility within the cement industry.

The journey toward this remarkable capacity began with a multi-faceted energy transition strategy aimed at reducing the company's carbon footprint. UltraTech’s current green energy capacity includes 1,580 MW from renewable sources and 444 MW from Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS). This combined capacity is crucial in meeting approximately 48 percent of UltraTech's power requirements, showcasing the effective integration of renewable energy into its operations.

In addition to the wind project in Rajasthan, UltraTech has commissioned 10 MW of WHRS capacity at its Sarlanagar Cement Works in Karnataka. This focus on WHRS complements the company’s renewable energy portfolio, enabling more efficient energy use and further reducing reliance on conventional power sources. The transition is evident as nearly a third of UltraTech's 76 manufacturing units in India have maintained green energy utilization rates above 50 percent, with five units exceeding 95 percent.

Beyond its immediate energy needs, UltraTech's initiatives contribute to broader environmental goals. The company is actively pursuing the integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to enhance the reliability and efficiency of its renewable energy supply. Furthermore, UltraTech has not invested in new captive thermal power capacities for over a decade, which demonstrates its commitment to decarbonization and sustainable growth in the cement sector.

Looking forward, UltraTech aims to continue expanding its renewable energy capabilities and enhance its green energy utilization. The commissioning of India's first on-site hybrid round-the-clock renewable energy project is a testament to this commitment. As the company sets new milestones in sustainable energy, its efforts will not only benefit its operations but also contribute positively to the global shift towards clean energy solutions.
