UltraTech Cement reached a notable milestone on October 5, 2026, with the commissioning of a 116.55 MW wind energy project in Barmer, Rajasthan. This addition brings the company’s total captive green power capacity to 2,024 MW, making it the first Indian firm to surpass the 2 GW threshold. The project reflects a continued effort to lower carbon emissions and transition toward more sustainable operational practices.

This achievement is supported by a comprehensive energy strategy that includes steady investment in wind and solar power alongside Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS). A recent addition of 10 MW in WHRS capacity at the Sarlanagar Cement Works in Karnataka has further bolstered this portfolio. Currently, renewable sources account for approximately 48 percent of the company’s total power requirements.

These energy goals are being implemented across UltraTech’s 76 manufacturing units in India. At present, nearly a third of these facilities have reached over 50 percent green energy utilization, while five units have exceeded 95 percent. This broad implementation across various sites indicates a systematic shift in how the company manages its energy consumption.

The company continues to grow its renewable footprint, having commissioned 430 MW of green energy capacity during the 2026 fiscal year. To improve the reliability of these sources, UltraTech is also utilizing Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This follows the 2025 launch of India’s first on-site hybrid project at the Sewagram Cement Works in Gujarat, which integrates solar, wind, and battery storage to provide renewable energy around the clock.

UltraTech Cement remains focused on its position within the sustainable cement industry, having avoided any investment in new captive thermal power capacity for over a decade. This choice aligns with a long-term strategy for decarbonization. As the company expands its renewable energy capabilities, it provides a practical example of how large-scale industrial operations can balance growth with a reduced environmental footprint.
