Uttar Pradesh Connects 2.36 Crore Homes to Tap Water

Uttar Pradesh has made significant strides in providing tap water access to its rural population, connecting over 2.36 crore households to safe drinking water as part of the Jal Jeevan Mission. This initiative, which began on August 15, 2019, aims to ensure that every rural household in India has functional tap-water connections. With the largest rural household base in India, Uttar Pradesh's progress is crucial to the overall success of this national mission, which has seen an increase in tap-water connections from 3.23 crore to approximately 15.54 crore across the country by March 2025.

The Jal Jeevan Mission represents a comprehensive approach to water supply, focusing not only on the installation of household taps but also on ensuring the sustainability of water sources and infrastructure. To support these connections, Uttar Pradesh has laid over 5.07 lakh km of pipelines across its villages, a monumental task that underscores the scale of the mission. By early 2026, more than 26,000 villages in the state had been certified under the Har Ghar Jal program, confirming that every household in those villages has access to tap water.

The implementation of this ambitious program involved collaboration between local government bodies, community organizations, and engineering teams to develop the necessary infrastructure. The state has also introduced the Jal Saarthi mobile app to facilitate live monitoring of water-supply projects at the village level, ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of water resources.
