Arpit and Abhijeet, two brothers from Bihar, have made significant progress in addressing water safety within their region. After a school project revealed high levels of arsenic in the local groundwater, they developed a magnetic filtration system designed to remove the contaminant efficiently. The technology targets arsenic at a molecular level and has produced notable results, reducing concentrations to below 2 ppb in field tests validated by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Their startup, Navmarg Research & Innovation, has since installed these filtration systems at 13 locations, providing 3.19 million litres of arsenic-safe water to communities in need.

This initiative addresses a severe water quality crisis affecting many rural areas in Bihar. In 2026, a study by WaterAid India found arsenic levels as high as 704.4 ppb in the Simri block of Bihar, far exceeding the safe limit of 10 ppb. Consuming water with these levels of arsenic poses serious health risks, including skin lesions and various cancers. Despite these dangers, many families remain dependent on hand pumps for their daily water supply. This reality motivated Arpit and Abhijeet to create a practical solution that could directly benefit their local community.

The technical mechanism behind their magnetic filtration system offers an alternative to conventional methods. Unlike systems that rely on chemicals or frequent replacements, this technology uses magnetic separation to isolate and remove arsenic from the water. This approach improves efficiency while reducing the ongoing costs associated with water purification. After a period of testing and validation, the system has moved from a conceptual stage to real-world application, proving effective under everyday conditions. The success of these pilot installations has led to growing interest and demand for the technology.

The impact of their work extends beyond the immediate provision of safe water. By ensuring access to arsenic-free supplies, Arpit and Abhijeet are helping to improve public health and general well-being in their communities. Their efforts contribute to a lower prevalence of arsenic-related diseases, enhancing the quality of life for many families. Furthermore, the installation of these systems encourages community engagement and raises awareness about water safety, allowing residents to take more informed actions regarding their health and environment.

Looking ahead, the brothers are focused on expanding the reach of their technology. They view the successful implementation of these magnetic filtration systems as a foundation for addressing broader water quality challenges across Bihar and other regions. As they continue to refine their design, they aim to bring safe drinking water to a larger number of at-risk communities. Their progress highlights the potential for sustainable solutions to address water contamination, a challenge currently faced by millions of people worldwide.
