Habitat PKR Women Build Event Constructs Three Affordable Homes in Norwood
From September 21-24, 2026, over 60 volunteers participated in Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region's Women Build event, raising $15,250 to build three affordable homes in Norwood, Ontario. These homes will be occupied by local families, including a three-generation family of women and a single mother with children.

From September 21 to 24, 2026, Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region (Habitat PKR) hosted a Women Build event in Norwood, Ontario. More than 60 volunteers participated in constructing walls for three affordable homes. This initiative raised $15,250 and brought together corporate teams, community members, and Habitat volunteers for four days of hands-on construction. The event culminated in a celebratory gathering at U4 Rooftop Event Space in Peterborough on September 25, highlighting the collaborative efforts to support local families in need of affordable housing. The homes being constructed will provide stable housing for a three-generation family of women, a single mother raising two teenagers, and a single-income family with two small children.
Habitat PKR CEO Susan Zambonin expressed gratitude for the community involvement, noting the enthusiasm and skills that volunteers contributed to the project. The event was supported by various teams, including D.M. Wills Associates, which returned as the presenting sponsor for a second consecutive year, showcasing their commitment to the cause through active participation in the construction efforts. This year’s Women Build event marked a return to home construction after previous retreats focused on building smaller structures. Participants of all genders were welcome, and no prior construction experience was necessary. The initiative aims to empower women by providing opportunities to learn construction skills in a supportive environment.
Calli McEachen, vice president of people and culture at D.M. Wills Associates, emphasized the initiative’s broader significance, stating that it creates opportunities for women to step into new spaces and discover their capabilities while contributing to a shared goal of affordable housing. The three single-storey, three-bedroom homes will feature universal design, energy-efficient construction, and outdoor space, making them suitable for the families who will occupy them. The future homeowners are already members of the Norwood community, and Habitat PKR’s affordable homeownership program allows families to purchase homes with no down payment and mortgages tailored to their income. Partner families are also required to contribute volunteer hours, which can include work on their own homes, reinforcing the community spirit behind the project.
Looking ahead, the funds raised during the Women Build event will facilitate the ongoing construction of these homes and bring the families closer to achieving affordable homeownership. Local businesses contributed to the event by providing meals and refreshments, further showcasing the community's commitment to supporting Habitat PKR’s mission. Zambonin highlighted the collaborative nature of the project, stating, "It really does take a community to build a home," and expressed optimism about the positive impact these homes will have on the lives of the families involved.
