This figure represents approximately 54% of the nation's total installed power capacity, according to JMK Research & Analytics' Q2 2026 India RE Update. The growth in renewable energy is largely driven by solar power, which accounts for 162 GW or 56% of this capacity. Wind energy follows with 57 GW, while large hydro contributes 52 GW, showcasing a diversified approach to sustainable energy production in the country.

The historical context of India's push for renewable energy can be traced back to the country's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and increasing reliance on clean energy sources. Solar energy has emerged as the largest contributor, reflecting advancements in technology and government initiatives aimed at promoting solar installations. In the first half of 2026 alone, India added around 19 GW of utility-scale solar capacity, representing a 32% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Rooftop solar additions also saw remarkable growth, totaling 6.4 GW, which is a 104% increase year-over-year, largely attributed to the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) program.

The on-the-ground implementation of renewable energy projects involves collaboration among various stakeholders, including government agencies, private developers, and local communities. The pipeline for future projects is robust, with around 149 GW of solar, wind, hybrid, and storage projects anticipated to be commissioned over the next four to five years. Additionally, 48 GW of projects are currently in the bidding phase, reflecting a sustained interest in expanding renewable energy infrastructure.

The broader economic and environmental benefits of increasing renewable energy capacity are substantial. As renewable sources accounted for 26.35% of India's total power generation in Q2 2026, this shift not only aids in reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also enhances energy security and creates job opportunities in the green energy sector. The report indicates that solar energy alone contributed 45.56% of total renewable generation, solidifying its role as a leading source of clean electricity in the country.

JMK Research anticipates about 15.5 GW of solar capacity will be installed over the next two quarters, contributing to India's goal of achieving a sustainable energy future.
