India's Solar Capacity Reaches 168 GW with 34.45 GW Added in 2026
By the end of August 2026, India's installed solar PV capacity reached 168 GW, with nearly 34.45 GW added in the first eight months of the year. This growth is attributed to improved project execution and sustained investor interest. Ground-mounted solar projects contributed significantly, while rooftop installations also expanded. India’s solar power sector saw significant expansion in 2026, reaching a total installed photovoltaic capacity of more than 168 gigawatts (GW) by the end of August. Data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) shows that 2,442.75 megawatts (MW) were added during August alone, bringing the total additions for the first eight months of the year to nearly 34.45 GW. This pace is driven by faster project completion, more resilient supply chains, and sustained interest from investors looking toward renewable energy.
These developments follow a long-term strategy to move away from fossil fuels and invest in cleaner energy sources. Ground-mounted projects remain the primary driver of this growth, accounting for 123.99 GW of the total capacity by late August. Meanwhile, grid-connected rooftop solar has reached 32.59 GW, hybrid projects contribute 4.83 GW, and off-grid installations stand at 6.63 GW. Government programs like the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana have been particularly effective in encouraging rooftop adoption among millions of households.
The actual rollout of these projects relies on coordination between government agencies, private developers, and local communities. By July 22, 2026, the PM Surya Ghar scheme had facilitated the installation of over 39.72 lakh rooftop systems, providing clean energy access to more than 48 lakh households. To keep this momentum going, the government provides financial aid and collateral-free loans for residential installations. At the same time, policies favoring domestic manufacturing are shaping the market; the MNRE’s updated ALMM List-I for solar PV modules showed a capacity of approximately 217 GW by August.
Beyond the infrastructure itself, the expansion of solar capacity brings broader economic and environmental advantages. Moving toward renewables helps lower greenhouse gas emissions and addresses the impacts of climate change while creating new jobs within the energy industry. Current regulatory measures and policies are designed to draw in technology investments, which in turn supports greater energy independence and provides a buffer against the volatility of global energy markets.

Maintaining this trajectory will depend on efficient project execution, stable supply chains, and consistent policy support.
