Kansas City Volunteers Pack Over 193,000 Meals on 9/11 Service Day

On the 25th anniversary of September 11 in 2026, more than 700 volunteers gathered at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City to pack a total of 193,000 meals for Kanbe’s Markets. Organized by the nonprofit 9/11 Day, the event was designed to honor the memory of the date through community service. This was the first time Kansas City hosted the initiative, which was one of 50 similar projects held across the country.

Among those present was Liz, a table captain who helped coordinate the meal-packing efforts. She worked alongside participants such as Sam and Andrea Moody, who had recently moved to Kansas City. For the Moodys, the significance of September 11 is personal. Andrea was on maternity leave from her job in the airline industry during the events of 2001. She explained that the day still brings back many emotions and serves as a reminder of the importance of contributing to the community. Sam Moody reflected on the atmosphere of that day, recalling how the world felt like a ghost town where people were nevertheless united in prayer and mutual support.

The couple, working with Liz and other volunteers, packed meals shoulder to shoulder while sharing their personal stories and reasons for participating. The collective effort served as a reflection on community resilience and the ways people support one one another. The event also included a moment of silence to honor the victims of 9/11 and recognized the contributions made by local fire and police departments.

This year marked the first time 9/11 Day brought its meal-packing initiative to Kansas City, extending its reach as it encourages communities across the U.S. to engage in projects that foster unity. As volunteers filled boxes with meals, they spoke of their desire to create positive change through service. The event provided essential meals for those in need and offered a way to reflect on the values of compassion and solidarity that emerged after the events of September 11, 2001. The success of the project establishes a precedent for future service initiatives in Kansas City and beyond.
