McLean Museum Reopens with Enhanced Accessibility and New Exhibitions
The McLean Museum in Greenock reopened on October 10, 2026, after major upgrades, featuring new exhibitions for its 150th anniversary and the Royal Scottish Academy's 200th anniversary.

The McLean Museum in Greenock, Scotland, officially reopened its doors to the public on Saturday, October 10, 2026, after being closed for over a year due to significant accessibility upgrades. This reopening marks a new chapter for the museum, part of the Watt Institution, as it welcomes visitors back to explore its collections and new exhibitions. The renovations included the installation of a new lift, improved lighting, automatic doors, and upgraded environmental controls, all aimed at enhancing the visitor experience.
The reopening coincides with the launch of two major anniversary exhibitions that celebrate important milestones in the history of the Watt Institution and the Royal Scottish Academy. These exhibitions commemorate 150 years of the Watt Institution and 200 years of the Royal Scottish Academy, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to engage with the region's rich cultural heritage. A spokesperson for the museum expressed excitement about welcoming visitors back, especially with the start of the school October break, making it a timely occasion for families.
While the museum has reopened partially, work is still ongoing in certain areas, particularly the mezzanine level, which remains closed until the lift installation is completed. Despite this, visitors can enjoy the ground floor, featuring the new exhibitions and displays created during the closure. The museum has also introduced a separate display space for the Caird Art Collection, further enhancing its offerings.
Funding from Museums and Galleries Scotland has supported additional improvements, including new herbarium cabinets for better storage and management of the museum’s collections. During the closure, the McLean Museum engaged with local schools, allowing students from Inverkip Primary School to access its collections for a project titled History = Our Story. This initiative focused on themes such as climate change, empire, and colonialism, resulting in the creation of eight animated films that are now available online.
The museum's commitment to educational outreach continues with plans for future projects and improved access to its collections for all visitors. As the McLean Museum completes its renovations, it anticipates further reopening in the coming weeks and months. The council has stated that popular activities and meetings of the Greenock Philosophical Society, which were part of the museum's program prior to the closure, can now resume. The museum aims to engage the community and enhance its offerings as it prepares for its 150th anniversary, ensuring that visitors have access to both new and previously displayed materials.
