The Youth Resources and Sports Department of the Government of Nagaland has reached a significant milestone by receiving the SKOCH Silver Award for its Grassroots Football Festival, also known as the Baby League. This recognition highlights the department's commitment to promoting grassroots sports development and increasing participation among children in the state. The SKOCH Award is a respected national accolade that acknowledges excellence in governance and public service, celebrating initiatives that contribute to socio-economic progress.

Launched in June 2024, the Grassroots Football Festival aims to introduce children aged 5 to 12 years to football in a fun and engaging way. Unlike traditional competitive tournaments, the Baby League emphasizes participation, enjoyment, and overall development, creating a nurturing environment for children to learn and grow. The initiative features small-sided matches tailored to different age groups, allowing young players to gain experience while fostering a love for the game.

Since its inception, the program has experienced remarkable growth. Participation surged from approximately 142 children in its first year to around 420 in the third edition held in 2026. This increase reflects the growing interest in grassroots football, as well as the positive response from children, parents, and the wider sporting community. The initiative also offers valuable opportunities for coaches to identify emerging talent and encourage continued involvement in sports among young players.

The recognition from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Mann Ki Baat address in June 2026 further underscores the importance of encouraging sports participation among young children. The Prime Minister's acknowledgment of Nagaland's efforts provides a significant boost for the Department, reinforcing the need to cultivate a strong sporting culture in the region. The SKOCH Silver Award not only honors past achievements but also inspires the department to expand and enhance its initiatives aimed at making sports accessible to all children in Nagaland.

Looking ahead, the Youth Resources and Sports Department remains committed to building upon the success of the Grassroots Football Festival. The focus will continue to be on strengthening opportunities for children to engage in organized sporting activities, fostering an inclusive environment that promotes lifelong involvement in sports. The ongoing efforts in grassroots sports development are vital for nurturing future athletes and instilling a sense of community and teamwork among the youth of Nagaland.
