Solar and battery project supports 15 families in Culebra

The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) has announced the completion of a significant community-based solar initiative in Culebra, Puerto Rico. This project aims to provide clean and reliable energy to 15 families, particularly those who depend on electricity for vital medical and specialized equipment. Daniel Whittle, Associate Vice President for Resilient Caribbean at EDF, emphasized the importance of this initiative in enhancing energy security in Puerto Rico, especially as hurricane season began last month. The solar systems installed include rooftop panels paired with battery storage to ensure that families can continue to operate essential medical devices and keep medications refrigerated during power outages.

Culebra, as an island municipality, faces unique challenges related to its electric system. The vulnerability of its infrastructure means that repairs following severe weather events or grid failures can be complicated and time-consuming. The installation of these solar systems was carried out in partnership with local organizations, including Mujeres de Islas and Foundation for a Better Puerto Rico, and was supported by Banco Popular and the Lowenstein Foundation. This project not only provides immediate relief to the families involved but also showcases the power of collaboration between various community groups and nonprofit organizations to enhance local energy resilience and self-sufficiency.

This initiative builds upon EDF's previous efforts in the region, as these 15 households join the 45 families previously served through EDF's pilot solar project in Culebra.
